Glossary

1.2.3 Glossary - C

 • Cache •
Local or temporary storage space, generally used to improve the performance of large amount of data transfer

 • Caching •
Process of transferring media files from a long-term storage, such as a tape, to a disk storage; this enables a faster and more reliable playout from the disk itself. Etere allows to cache scheduled events without operator intervention

 • Cataloguing •
Process of adding metadata to assets to improve their organization, searchability, and management. Etere supports cataloguing through its "Metadata Indexing" professional interface, designed for fast and efficient metadata entry

 • Censorship •
Removing or editing content considered inappropriate or undesirable by a broadcaster. In Etere, censored versions of assets can be created, containing only approved segments

 • Channel •
Portion of a broadcast network assigned to a specific station. See Station in [1.2.19. Glossary - S]

 • Channel Bug •

Persistent logo displayed in a corner of the TV screen to identify the broadcasting station. The bug may change depending on the program. Etere allows to dynamically manage channel bugs as if they were secondary events

 • Character Generator •
Device, usually called CG, used to electronically generate and overlay text or graphics onto a video signal. Etere supports CG control, including text overlays and logo insertion for channel branding

 • Checksum •
Value check of a data block, calculated by applying a specific algorithm, used to verify the integrity of said data block. Etere uses MD5 checksums to ensure file consistency and detect corruption

 • Clip •
Portion of digitized video or audio that is used as source material for editing, production, or broadcast

 • Clone •
Exact copy of a resource or process. In Etere, a "clone" usually refers to a secondary automation configured identically to the main one and it's intended to replace it in failover scenarios

 • Closed Captioning •
Service for hearing-impaired viewers that displays program dialogue and sounds as text on screen. It can be enabled or disabled by the viewer

 • Cluster •
 ▪ Group of multiple events scheduled together within the same block (Etere Air Sales)
 ▪ Group of multiple events that share the same scheduled time (Etere Scheduling)

 • Coder •
Device that converts analog audio and video signals into a digital format for transmission. It may also convert digital signals into analog format

 • Commercial •
Advertisement transmitted by a station, it is also known as spot. Etere provides a dedicated and complete management of commercials, from their contract creation to their final data reconciliation

 • Component Video •
Video signal in which the brightness and colour components are transmitted separately. This allows to better preserve image quality by retaining maximum luminance and chrominance bandwidth. RGB is a common example of a component video

 • Composite Video •
Video signal where luminance and chrominance are combined, along with the timing reference (also known as 'sync' information), using a coding standard such as NTSC, PAL or SECAM. This provides a good solution for transmission, but it's difficult to accurately decode a composite video back into pure luminance and chrominance, which limits its use in post production

 • Confidence Monitoring •
Direct monitoring, to ensure proper capture, of a material that's being recorded while the recording is still in process. Many recorders have one or more playback heads trailing the recording head that are used to perform confidence monitoring

 • Configuration •
Logical table containing environmental and memory settings that are used by an application session. Etere stores configuration parameters and GUI settings, both global and per-user, into an SQL Server database

 • Conforming •
Process, also known as Video Conforming or Video Conformation, that consists in assembling various segments into a single video file, based on time indications contained into an EDL (Edit Decision List). Etere allows to easily conform segments belonging to different video files, either hi-res or low-res, through workflows. This ensures reliability and allows operators to trace the performed operations

 • Container •
Reserved time block in the schedule which remains available until filled with actual content. Etere allows to book such slots for incoming or yet-to-be-ingested materials

 • Content Check •
Process, also known as Content Control, of previewing material to be broadcasted, usually for the purpose of verification or censorship. Etere allows to automatically perform the content check of assets through a workflow, detecting undesired occurrences of video freezes, black frames, excessive brightness and more

 • Contract •
Virtual document detailing the sale of a specific commercial block to a customer. Also known as Order or Commercial Order. See Order in [1.2.15. Glossary - O]

 • Cue •
State that a playback device achieves after locating a defined point, usually the starting point of an upcoming program/recording to be executed. Etere supports the 'cue' state for all compatible devices, enabling precise playback control
