Troubleshooting

70.4.1 Headquarters common issues

During the archiving process, it could happen that some issues occurs, here below are listed the most common issues and the actions that Etere HSM takes for them:

Not enough tapes available
In case an archiving operation does not count with enough available tapes for being performed, Etere HSM will warn the operator with a proper message ('No available tapes found in the [media-pool-X]') displayed in the Work Queue section; additionally, a SNMP message will be sent to the Etere SNMP Console indicating that 'No available tapes found in [media-pool-X] for the [asset-X] with [metafile-X], [codec-X] and [n-copies-number]'.
Moreover, if the archive operation is set to perform more than one copy (on different media pools), the archive operation will be performed using all available tapes without stopping the T-workflow but warning the operator and sending the SNMP message

Long defrag/recatalogue times
In case a drive is requested to perform one or more long-time operations (i.e. defrag or recatalogue), all other short-time operations (e.g. archive, restore) scheduled for tapes different from the one current in use by the drive will be re-scheduled to be performed by another drive.
Additionally, all other long-time operations will be preferably scheduled in drives which are already performing (or queueing) some long-time operations.

Operations scheduled on the same tape
All those operations scheduled on the same tape will be performed respecting the set operation priorities, that is, if a restore is requested, current archive operations will be paused to let the restore to be performed.
Furthermore, since the tape is the same for all operations, the 'mount' and 'positioning ' of the tape will be performed only once (at the start of the first operation), after which, it will run the other operation on the same tape performing only the 'writing' (and updating the database).

Full tape before finishing an operation
It can happen that an archiving operation is scheduled on a tape with -logical but not physical- free space (i.e. this due to the fact that the remaining space reported by libraries is not fully accurate). In this cases, Etere HSM will be unable to complete the archiving operation since at a certain moment the tape will be full before  storing the entire file, therefore, the partially copied file will be deleted and the remaining space updated (to allow other smaller files to be archived on it) and the archiving operation will be re-scheduled on another tape with enough space.

Command timeout during operations
During Archive/Restore operations, error messages "20000111 Command Time Out" displayed in Headquarters Work Queue as consequence of momentary miscommunication between HSM Robotics and Tape Drive, as indicated below.
20000111 Command Time Out
In Headquarters, those jobs with "20000111 Command Time Out" error would be re-queued automatically after HSM Headquarters has complete those jobs with equal priority in the work queue.

Requires to login database frequently
During business-as-usual operations, all scheduled tasks are frequently interrupted by the “Database Login” dialogue box popup in HSM headquarters, if the dialogue is closed without entering valid database user ID and password, all scheduled tasks would be halted.
This issue can be resolved by selecting “Windows authentication” as authentication mode in Configuration > Settings > Basic Configuration > System settings, and restart HSM module after making the changes.
