Set up the SNMP service

59.8.3.7 SNMP connection

In order to correctly work, the Etere SNMP Console service requires to configure its connection parameters (with an administrator account) under the Etere Configuration > Resource Editor > Tools > Configure > SNMP:

Resourece_editor

SQL
In this section must be defined both the Server and the Database where the tables are stored.
• Server & Database: Enter here the SQL connection data (i.e. server and database) required for connecting and storing SNMP data. In case these fields are empty, the system's main database will be automatically set.
NB: Please note that in order to use a database different from the main one, it will be required to first launch a system maintenance on it to create the proper structure for holding SNMP data.

Receive trap mode
Choose the method to be used to trap messages.
• Directly by console: If enabled, messages will be received by the Etere Monitoring Console which must be opened in order to receive them.
• By windows service: If enabled, messages will be automatically received by SNMP services (even if the Monitoring Console is not started). This mode requires both the Windows SNMP and Etere SNMP services to be installed and running.

Trap configuration
Specify here information related to the server(s) to which SNMP messages will be sent.
• Console IP: The IP address of the computer to which messages will be sent (i.e. on which the "Etere SNMP Console Service / Windows SNMP Service" resides).
• Resend IP: The IP address of a second computer to which the messages will be resent.
For instance, set here the public IP address (172.31.231.40) of the remote console of the Etere customer service to which forward messages (requires a configured VPN connection).
• Console port: Specifies the port number to be used, by default the messages are sent to the port number 162.
• Site: Enter the license number that identifies your Etere installation. This field is very important in case of using 'Snmp v.2c' since this field is a part of the encryption-key.
• SNMP protocol: Each time you change between the use of these protocols, depending of the selected "receive trap mode", the Etere SNMP Console Service / Windows SNMP Service must be restarted. The available communication protocols are:
- Snmp v.2: This option will send clear-text messages, without any encryption.
- Snmp v.2c: By selecting this protocol, the messages will be sent encrypted.

Note: if the resend will not be handled, the Resend IP must be set at 127.0.0.1 to avoid loops with itself.

Receive trap login mode
Depending of the selected 'receive trap mode', the data to access it must be defined:
• Windows authentication: Access the SNMP database using the current windows login credentials.
• SQL login mode: Access the SNMP database using SQL credentials (username and password).

NB: If the receive trap mode is "by windows service" the sql login mode is the only supported authentication; otherwise (if trapping "directly by console") both authentications are supported.

Note: In case the SNMP database has either not been set or has been wrongly set, a red bar will be displayed in the Resources Map informing that either the "snmp database is not configured" or that the system "cannot open the database".
Once all the above mentioned parameters have been compiled just press the [Save] button to apply changes and save them into the SNMP Parameters File.
