Why use a database to archive messages?
A database is used to archive messages (e.g. read messages) because messages will be saved as a history of messages. Moreover, with a database, it's possible to install an Etere SNMP Console in "Only Browser" mode Pc's needed only to display messages; in this way, more Consoles can be configured and used within the same network. One will receive and manage the SNMP messages from the various Agents, saving them in the database; the other Console can be used only for displaying and checking the messages.

What is written in the SNMP database?
The archived SNMP database contains information regarding the messages sent by the agents. The database is composed of three tables:

•SNMPWS: This table contains information regarding P.C.s sending SNMP messages, particularly the I.P. address, the community, the name of the file that created the message, and the station's name that generated the message.

•SNMPERROR: This table contains information regarding the SNMP message itself, in particular the application that has generated the message and the login name in the network, and finally, the error codes

•SNMPFILTER: This table contains the list of filters set in the Filtering Parameters section.

Should I Install SNMP Console on the same P.C. where SQL is installed?
In the SNMP Console, it's possible to configure the SQL server and database that will be used to save SNMP messages (see Connection Parameters); it is possible to install the Console on the same P.C. where SQL is installed or on a different one; in both cases, what is important is to configure the Console properly, so that it connects correctly to the P.C. where SQL and the database are installed.

If the Console is installed on the same P.C. where the database is, it's possible to view saved messages even if there are problems with the network, and the network activity is only between the Console and the Agents; in the other case (i.e. different Pc's), the PC's involved are two (Console and SQL) plus the various Agents.

Can Etere receive SNMP messages from other applications?
The Etere SNMP Console can receive SNMP messages from Etere modules and devices and any other SNMP-enabled device or application. In this case, the "Receive non-Etere messages" must be active in the General Parameters.

•Windows applications: It's possible to receive messages generated by Windows O.S., usually listed in the Windows Event Viewer. It's also possible to filter which Event Viewer messages to receive using the EVNTWIN.EXE utility.

•SNMP Devices: It's possible to display messages sent by other devices, such as routers, network switches and any other device enabled to use the SNMP protocol.
