Etere HSM stands for Hierarchical Storage Management. It is an enterprise Tape library manager. Each day, a TV station accumulates a huge quantity of video assets, and if the archive size is not very huge, or less than one hundred terabytes, a disk-based library can accommodate all the video assets. However, with several hundred terabytes of video assets, a huge storage space is required, and therefore, a tape library is a simple and effective solution.
Hierarchical Storage Management
Etere HSM is an application system designed for broadcast use rather than a general-purpose system adapted for broadcast needs. Etere HSM uses the SQL database to store tape information; video assets can be easily located when performing asset searches. Etere HSM provides the following key features:
✓User-friendly interface, a display screen showing the contents in tape, even for offline tapes.
✓Capable of driving multiple copies of the tapes. Up to three copies of tapes can be held in the library or off the shelf.
✓Ability to take care of the archiving of all the video files. It manages both high and proxy resolution with increased protection.
✓Metadata integration: when a clip is archived into the Tape Library, it archives all the related metadata in the asset form.
✓ Long-term archive management: the tape library is designed to extend the system capacity significantly for permanent data storage.
✓MS Windows-based, interfaces with every library or tape drive compatible with Microsoft Windows.
✓A single view of a multi-library environment; it can manage different library locations as a single logical entity.
Etere HSM can be connected to any library through three core modules: Headquarters, Robotics Control, and Data Pump. All these modules can be installed on different PCs to achieve maximum performance.
•Headquarters is the brain that manages all requests for archiving and restoring files and other operations such as tape injection and ejection.
• The Data Pump is the module managing the reading and writing of data on every single drive; an individual Data Pump is required for each drive on the system.
•Robotics Control is the interface between Etere and the tape library's component; it performs all mechanical movements within the tape library and provides the catalogue of all tapes present in the tape library.
